The 200-4R is an underrated override transmission. It has equally the same amount of strength as the 700-R4 and will fit perfectly into most places as it, such as variations of the Chevy Chassis. This transmission has the following multi-case bell housings:

  • Buick pattern
  • Pontiac pattern
  • Oldsmobile pattern
  • Chevrolet bell housing bolt pattern

Can you use the 200-4R?

The best way of determining is it will make a perfect fit is to know the specified torque capacity. You can swap it into a vintage muscle car easily because it uses a mechanical gear speedometer. Gearstar performance has ironed out all the problems that arise while installing and using the transmission; hence, you will not inherit a bunch of issues that arise from poor craft.

History of the 200-4R

The transmission joined the market in 1980. It was not as known as the other two General Motors models of the 80s, but it has retained its sturdiness in the industry. 200-4R is a part of the Turbo Hydra-Matic collection and has undergone massive evolution since the early versions.

Gearstar stocks several 200-4R transmission models, hence you will find enough parts for a performance grade car. It is recommendable that one uses models of the following units when they need ultimate performance:

  • Oldsmobile 4-4-2
  • Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS
  • Buick Grand National

The beginning models of the transmission used PRND321 and later models used PRN(D)D21.

The original purposes of the transmission were an installation in high power applications, such as the 1989 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Indy 500 race cars. This was because of the different torque convertors and gear ratios integrated into the system. Currently, some vehicles that have a horsepower higher than 700 still use the 200-4R, such as the following:

  • The 1981-1990 Cadillac Fleetwood, Brougham, and Deville
  • Buick Regal of 1981 -1987
  • The 1983 – 1989 Safari Wagon, Parisienne, and Bonneville
  • The 1984 – 1987 GMC Caballero and Pontiac Grand Prixx
  • The 1981 Pontiac Firebird 301 and Buick Century
  • The 1981 to 1988 Chevelle, Electra RWD, Buick LeSabre, El Camino, Malibu, and Monte Carlo
  • The 1983 to 1988 Supreme and Olds Cutlass 442

The functionality of the 200-4R

The transmission often shares its mounting space with TH-400. It is common for TH-350 to get a swap with 200-4R because of similar dimensions. The exchange is necessary when you want to better overdrive gear.

The 200-4R transmission uses a spline output shift similar to that of the TH-350 – 27-spline. This setup makes it a preferable option when creating a conversion from a two-speed transmission to a four-speed.

200-4R has a 2.74 first gear ratio. It has a bolt pan of 16 and a 13mm bolt head. This setting is typical in General Motors rear wheels and engines made between 1981 and 1990.

One has a couple of modification options once they decide to bolt in the 200-4R transmission. The Gearstar team has adequate tips to swap transmissions and engage all the functions. The provided manual and earned experienced is sufficient to diagnose the car’s specific requirements of installation and maintenance.
